CHAPTER THIRTEEN
I spent the week waiting for it to end. I bought two dresses I had no use for, and debated endlessly with a remarkably patient Maud about which one I should wear. I called Ronnie every day to ask her questions to which she had no answers, although she tried valiantly to help. I commanded Josh to tell me everything he knew about Jimmy, and he obliged with cheerful tolerance. Tom though was out for most of the week, spending much of his time with Miss Maxwell. He and Josh limited their conversation to monosyllables, and while he was a little friendlier with Maud and me, there was nothing that approached what had passed for intimacy before. I was quite content to daydream about Jim; if it hadnât been for that, I would have been almost eager for school to start again. Trinck answered my lengthy letters with the briefest of postcards, and I realized, feeling disloyal, that I was becoming much friendlier with Ronnie than I was with my roommate. I knew the problems that might result but I chose, when I did think about it, which wasnât too often, to assume that once Trinck got to the city, everything would be all right. In the meantime, I had a social life to occupy my thoughts.
Friday evening finally arrived. It took long enough to. Maud had already left (she was taking the weekend off), so I dressed and put on my makeup without her assistance. I took the small bottle of cologne she had picked out for me and splashed it generously all over my wrists and earlobes, feeling feminine and sophisticated. After checking myself in the mirror for the tenth time, I went into the living room to await Prince Charming.
Tom was sitting there as I came in. âMy, weâre all dressed up, arenât we?â he said.
As it happened, he was dressed up too, so I assumed his âweâ wasnât meant sarcastically. âYeah, we sure are,â I agreed.
âWhere are you going?â he asked.
âTo the movies,â I said guilelessly.
âAlone?â
âNo, with Jimmy.â
âJimmy who?â
âJimmy Green. Donât you remember?â I asked, and then realized I had never told Tom about my date. He simply hadnât been around to tell.
âNo, I donât. What am I supposed to remember?â Tom asked, annoyed. That wasnât surprising; he had been all week.
âOh didnât I tell you?â I asked, trying to get out of a bad situation as best I could. âJimmy Green is Carolâs brother. The one Josh told us about. He asked me out for tonight, and I said yes.â
âWithout asking me?â
âYou said it would be okay. Just as long as I got back by twelve.â
âDid I? I shouldnât have. Youâre much too young to be going out.â
âBut you said I could. Donât you remember?â
âLook, donât tell me how to raise children, young lady.â
âBut heâs already coming over. Heâll be here in five minutes. Tom, please, you said I could.â
âHow will I know if you get back by twelve? Iâm not about to spend my evening sitting here waiting for you.
